The Book of Concord

This book is a collection of writings known as the Lutheran Confessions. Unlike modern English usage, "confession" in this context does not refer to a confession in court or a confession of sin. It's what the Lutheran Church believes and teaches. You'll note in the contents below that one of the document titles contains the word "apology". Again, the meaning is different. An apology here refers to an explanation of belief, or further detail.

The Book of Concord was assembled in 1580 and includes the following:

  1. The Three Chief Symbols
  2. The Augsburg Confession
  3. Apology (Defense) of the Augsburg Confession
  4. The Smalcald Articles
  5. Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope
  6. The Small Catechism
  7. The Large Catechism
  8. Formula of Concord
    Epitome
    Solid Declaration

You can read the Book of Concord by clicking here.  The site you're taken to has the English text of the Concordia Triglotta, published in 1921.  That version contains the Confessions in German, Latin, and English. There is a copy of the English translation in print from Repristination Press, called Concordia, translated by F. Bente & W.H.T. Dau.
